Scarlet

DOB: 5/11/21

Scarlet is truly a fighter and a survivor. Her surviving siblings are Mia and Teddy who are also sanctuary residents. Shortly after being rescued as small kittens, they began getting sick, one by one. Two of their siblings died before the vet determined it was panleukopenia (also known as feline distemper), a fatal virus for kittens.

Hospitalization was recommended immediately in order for the three remaining to survive. We couldn’t afford hospitalization for 3 kittens for a minimum 10 day period so with daily trips to the vets office for injections and no sleep, I did the 24hr round the clock treatments of fluids, feedings and at home medications every three hours (for all three cats) within foster care to keep these precious babies alive. They all three have long recovered from the virus, but the side effects of the virus had affected the development of their brain (cerebellum).

They now live with a mild case of cerebellar hypoplasia and a compromised immune system that we monitor closely. Although their neurological conditions are evident, so is their love and happiness for life.
