Red
DOB: 2/19/12
Update: In Oct 2024 Red began getting what looked to be an infection in his left eye. The vet prescribed antibiotics which did not cure the infection. After trying a couple options, it was recommended to swab the area for testing and also to biopsy as well. The tests came back both positive for staphulococcus pseudintermedius and squamous cell carcinoma. An Eye Removal (Enucleation) Surgery was recommended, but the infection had to be treated and cleared first due to his compromised immune system. However, after Red had gone in for the biopsy and returned home he just never recovered after going under anesthesia. Even with support, he continued getting worse until his body began shutting down and his was humanely euthanized on January 2, 2025. We miss him dearly, but his memory will always remain at the sanctuary!
Red is a big old Tom Cat that showed up at our home one day for a nice meal and a dry place to sleep. He continued this routine for several days before deciding to call our house his home. Maybe it was the other cats that lured him in, I don’t know, but nobody in the neighborhood claimed him as their own, so in our house he stayed. Red is FIV positive and is closely monitored for his compromised immune system.
He hung out in the garage a lot to stay out of the heat, bad weather and away from the ducks. He does not like you to get too close to him, but we are working with him each day to earn his trust.
He’s getting to be an old man now and these days just loves to eat, drink and relax all day! He definitely gets all of that, and then some, here at the sanctuary. He’s also learning how to make more feline friends.
