Papa
Papa is one of more than seventy (now fifty) cats we care for at our Lantana colony. Arriving one night, as always, we do a head count to monitor all cats present, change out fresh water and prepare clean food dishes for each cat. Papa was always one of the first to run out to greet us upon arriving.
This night he hung back and limped out slowly, then dropped at my feet. I stayed with him while another ran to retrieve a cat carrier because we knew he needed medical attention and had to be removed from the area. He was kept safely at the rescue for the evening and seen by our vet first thing the next morning.
The x-rays showed that he had been shot in his leg and that his leg is now broken as a result. The vet gave two options for Papa, amputation or euthanasia. Well, I chose neither and insisted that surgery be performed to not only remove the object from his leg, but to repair and save it so that he can walk on all fours again.
The surgery was a success and Papa is once again a happy four-legged feline who has been adopted living happily ever after.
